Ms. Gurthie's Bio

A facilitator at CMS' Piedmont Middle School, an IB World School, Lisa Gurthie holds a Bachelor’s degree in American Studies from Tulane University and a Master of Arts in Teaching degree in Social Studies Education from Brown University. Since 1989, she's taught in schools varying from a 100 year old boarding school, to community college , to the US Army. Her students have run the gamut from 28 year old active-duty soldiers just returning home from the Persian Gulf War to 12 year olds spending their first night away away from home in a foreign country.

image_earth007.jpgWinner of the Cato Award for Excellence in Teaching, Ms. Gurthie has received teaching grants and scholarships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, National Humanities Center and the Charlotte World Affairs Council. She has been a presenter at the NCTIES (technology) and NCCSS (social studies) state education conferences as well as the CMS Edtech conference. She has been named Piedmont Teacher of the Year, Harris Teacher of the Year semifinalist, Rocky River Teacher of the Year nominee, and nationally considered for the Teaching Tolerance Award for Culturally Responsive Teaching.

image_nature007.jpgThe poetry students wrote in her class is scattered throughout downtown Charlotte’s “The Green” park and the art her students created as part of the “New Courage” project has twice been displayed at the Levine Museum of the New South. Her students' writing became the project's logo. Her students have done combined classroom activities with students in college as well as high school in Cairo, Egypt and middle schoolers in Wraclaw, Poland.

Her interests include the technological revolution, especially as it intersects with education, the science of learning and motivation; culture, social fabric, and the hidden reasons behind what we believe are our personal choices; random trivia, creamy desserts, dance, art, improvisation, travel (37 states and 17 countries so far), thinking and reading.
She is married to stylish supergenius and regional chief engineer Michael Gurthie and has three awesome children ages 24, 15, and 8.

image_nature025.jpgThe Essentials

Lisa Gurthie loves to analyze, philosophize, and accessorize. She is a sucker for a clever analogy, a well-crafted metaphor, and symbolic meaning. She is aware of your gifts even if you are not yet. Ms. Gurthie helps her students use their gifts to enjoy learning and to realize the value and connectedness of everything and everyone. Her lessons integrate student voice and choice; prioritize creativity and respect; and emphasize student buy-in and real-world tie-in.She believes that rigor is not pushing a pencil, it’s pushing an envelope.

She cries at her students’ recitals and graduations. She paints henna on their hands, saves their thank you notes, and is willing to make a fool of herself in front of them. She’s been hit by a car, gassed on a Paris subway, and shot with the most deadly bullet sold from the most powerful handgun made - but that wasn’t even remotely the hard stuff. She’s learned from all of it. She'll tell you most anything you want to know and she’ll make you feel comfortable to do the same.

image_people034.jpgThe Results

Ms Gurthie's students have gone on to attend Ivy League colleges including Harvard and Princeton (molecular biology), have moved to every inhabited continent on the face of the earth, have become lawyers and bankers, nurses and entrepreneurs , moms and dads, doctors at John's Hopkins, teachers , lead singers, professional artists , full-time actors, organic farmers, international rights advocates, molecular biologists and business people. They've been presenters at SXSW, been named North Carolina's Student teacher of the year, become professors at Davidson College, worked at Google, become professional extreme Kayakers, taken the Trans Siberian Railway by themselves across Asia and the Gobi Desert, travelled the world, won Public Relations Awards , are published authors, and NPR foreign correspondents currently reporting from Moscow. Piedmont Students are helicoptering down sides of mountains hanging by a string to rescue stranded people as in this picture
and the piedmont hall of accomplishments below.

image_people012.jpg To My Current Students

Where do you want to go and what do you want to become? Whatever you desire, set smart goals for it, and don't stop working toward it!
My job is to help you get where you want to go! Just remember, that extreme kayaker above was once just a kid at home watching Youtube videos of other guys going off waterfalls, and that lawyer was once standing up in my classroom speaking her opinion on women's rights.
Do you believe that you can achieve what you want? They did, and now they are doing it. I look forward to seeing you become your best self.

Love,
Ms Gurthie
